Podcast 34 – The Modern Technology Evolution Of Hunting

Technology has been weaving its way into our world for decades; computers, phones, cars and automation machines have made our lives easier and frankly, more enjoyable. But when it comes to hunting, where do you draw the line? When is enough, enough?

Today I’m joined by my good friend and returning podcast guest, Joe Wilson where we attempt to dissect technology and where each of us stands when it comes to using various products such as cellular trail cameras, ozone eliminators, range finding sights, and electric bikes. We talk about the fine line of fair chase and how some products are making things too easy for people.

On the other hand, we also discuss the angle of hunter recruitment and how some products may help increase hunter recruitment because it shortens the learning curve and helps people become more successful as novice hunters. To round out the podcast, we look into the future in regards to regulations and how technology in the field may change season dates, bag limits and certain regulations around hunting.

Topics Covered In This Episode Include:

  • The transition of hunting from what our grandparents knew to how things have evolved in today’s modern world
  • How this podcast came to be and what was the final straw that tipped me over the edge to talk about this topic
  • Cellular trail cameras and if using them during hunting season is considered fair chase
  • Drone technology and using them to scout for animals in the field
  • Manipulating game movements through lures, habitat improvements, and baiting
  • Hunter recruitment and how technology may help increase the hunting population in the United States
  • Ozone scent elimination systems
  • Thinking to the future in regards to what technologies will be legal and how season dates may change based on the use of certain products
  • Hunter accessibility into the backcountry and the use of electric bikes in hunting
  • GPS mapping and phone technology in the field to communicate and pinpoint locations of game animals
