Today I’m joined by Matt Dunfee, director of the CWD Alliance based out of Fort Collins to discuss the current state of Chronic Wasting Disease in Colorado. I’ll have to admit, this is one of the better podcasts I’ve recorded and it’s jam packed with unbiased, scientific information to help us better understand what CWD is, how it’s being managed, and what hunters can do to help.
Matt defines what Chronic Wasting Disease is, what a prion is, and how it kills deer, elk, and moose once infected. We cover what Colorado Parks and Wildlife is doing to help minimize its spread by increasing tag quotas in certain areas, adjusting season dates, and requiring mandatory testing in select regions. Matt walks us through what hunters need to do in order to test their deer and elk and what we should do to dispose of a carcass properly. We then talk about prevalence rates among deer and elk in Colorado and what the reality could be if left alone by providing insanely scary data from a neighboring state, Wyoming.
